Preventative Flea Treatments – Keeping The Fleas At Bay

Flea Prevention, Fleas Add comments

When people think of fleas, they think they only affect the pet, in reality what they do not realize is that they also affect the yard, so one has to find a way to control the fleas inside the home and outside as well.

It is important to do you research about the type of treatment that you can acquire, or the ones that are available at your local store. One type of treatment that you can get is the one that is a slow-acting growth regulator, this is a chemical that works by keeping the insect from producing. This treatment can be in the form of a pill or something that you put on the pet. This is known as a preventative type of flea treatment, as it mainly works on the eggs and immature fleas!

Preventative flea treatments usually contain one of the following, methoprene, pyriproxifen, fenoxycarb, or lufenuron, in flea medication products like collars, pills, sprays and shampoo. Most of the time, a vet might be the only one able to supply you with the pill version.

If you are suffering from a nasty flea infestation then you need two pronged approach, one that combines a preventative approach such as an insect growth regulator on the one hand and an out right flea killer on the other hand. One should not use anything that could be toxic to be the pets (cats, dogs, ferrets). A number of flea medications you can use to achieve this, but you will find that some will include pyrethrins and citrus oils (linalool and limonene). Another option is the use of flea herbal treatments or shampoos on your pets. It is important to note that this will not eliminate flea infestations but will certainly go a long way to reducing the infestations. To make your fight against fleas more effective, it will be wise to treat your home and outdoors, while at the same time applying preventative insect growth regulator on your pet.
